C.T. Scan -
Abdominal

Purpose:
Evaluation of abdominal aorta, abscess localization, billary obstruction, liver, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, adrenals, lymph nodes, and retroperitoneum.

Prep:
NPO four (4) hours in advance except for medications, water and oral prep.
Patient arrives one hour in advance to drink the entire oral contrast.

Exceptions:
No oral prep for CT KUB (R/O kidney stones).

Restrictions:
Known allergy to iodinated contrast.
For diabetic patients, we need BUN and creatinine levels.
Patients need to be off Glucophage and Glucovance 48 hours after the procedure (check with doctor first).

Process:
Patient lies on CT “table”.
Scans are obtained.
The test takes approximately 15-20 minutes.

Side Effects:
Side effects to CT procedures are minimal, but may include hot flashes or nausea, as a result of the contrast agent.
