A CT scan can be used to evaluate almost any part of the body. Your child will be lying down on a narrow table which slides through a donut shaped structure as x-rays are used to create images. For certain examinations, it will be necessary to give your child radiographic contrast material: – Oral contrast - highlights the intestines. – IV (intravenous) contrast highlights blood vessels and major organs. – Almost all CT scans of the abdomen require that your child drink a solution which will fill the bowel; most children don't object to the taste. For some exams your child will have to lie very still, if IV (intravenous) sedation is required- our staff will provide specific instructions at the time of scheduling.
